College students and adults can participate in our Ambassador Program, an independent study program at the Selamta Family Project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As an Ambassador, you will travel to Addis Ababa and spend a lot of time getting to know everyone in the Selamta family. In preparation for your trip, you will design a personal project to work on during your eight to twelve week stay at Selamta. In cooperation with our Volunteer Coordinator, each Ambassador designs a project that reflects personal inspiration and interests. In the past, Ambassadors created art projects, lead basis woodworking workshops, taught English at the local school, and built chicken coops, as examples.
In addition to your project, each Ambassador spends a lot of time with our children, Moms and Aunties. Through play, tutoring and attentive listening, our Ambassadors become strong positive role models for our children; they befriend our Moms and Aunties over long coffee ceremonies and intimate chats. Be prepared for the Selamta experience to change your life!
To apply, please complete our application that includes your personal information along with a formal, written essay stating your motivation to volunteer at Selamta and your project proposal. We also require two written recommendation letters from individuals who can elaborate on your work ethic and personal attributes.
