Our goal at Selamta is to help our children reach their full potential as productive, happy and independent adults. We believe that we must provide more than food, clothing, and shelter to make this goal happen for our young charges, but truthfully, our budget covers just those basics for now..  Children must have all kinds of experiences to be able to make good decisions as they grow so when they reach adulthood, they have the experience to make those good decisions. Our kids have only had minimal input into their clothing choices or even whether their tummy is full, let alone a little spending money of their own. We propose a different kind of sponsorship program for you to become very involved in our young person's life and round out their young life with options.

Sponsoring a Selamta child would mean providing just $30.00 a month directly for your child... no management charges or overhead deductions will be taken out.

Here is the best part... your Selamta child will communicate through e-mail and letters. We will facilitate these communications, helping your Selamta child learn the computer skills that are necessary to reach out to you. Another benefit will be the anticipation of your return note, which for most of these kids, will be more important than the money. Having someone care enough about you that they write... well, that is the highlight of the day for our Selamta kids. Of course, we know that you will have the joy of getting to know your Selamta child, staying connected, and maybe even traveling to attend a graduation ceremony. It is very possible that this can happen!

$30.00 a month may not seem like a lot, but it truly will make a difference in the life of your Selamta Child. The Selamta budget does not include music lessons, movies or those "please, oh please can I have them" special pair of new shoes. That is where you, as a Selamta sponsor, can really make a big difference.

Our kids need the freedom to make choices about music lessons, art supplies, a new poster or just buying some soda. When they are big enough to leave Selamta, they will have had some experience with money management, budgeting and saving plus writing thank you notes. Their savings will help them get a good start towards an independent life. All because of you, their sponsor. Invest your heart and get involved...

Urgent and sustained action is needed to provide loving family homes for children left abandoned by the AIDS pandemic in Ethiopia. The alternative of sending orphaned children into over-crowded and under-resourced orphanages is a dangerous stop-gap. Ignoring or warehousing a generation of children orphaned by AIDS are not solutions. Because of extreme poverty and the stigma of AIDS, very few of our children can ever hope to be welcomed by extended families in their home country. The vast majority of Ethiopia's orphans are exiled into a childhood of desperation, discrimination and fear.

If these children are not somehow returned to the lifelong support of a truly caring family home, the stage is set for a continuation of the ignorance, extreme poverty and despair that is the breeding ground for social turmoil and AIDS.

Selamta programs aim to provide our children with safe, loving care today and a thorough preparation for life on their own tomorrow. A small investment yields enormous returns in the lives of our children who would otherwise be abandoned, homeless and without the love or care of a family.

Small investments yield enormous returns

• $100 will provide HIV, HEP A/B and childhood vaccinations for 5 children.
• $360 will pay a full year’s sponsorship of one child.
• $750 will provide a month's nutritious food for the children and staff at the Selamta Children's Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
• $1000 will restock our clothing and shoe supplies for our in-coming children.
• $5,000 will establish and sponsor a loving family home for an entire family of eight children and two women.
